Chris Christie: Civil Rights Movement could have been resolved by popular vote

The New Jersey governor said "people would have been happy to have referendum on civil rights rather than fighting and dying in the streets in the South."

Which people? The overwhelming majority of whites who were against equal rights for black people? Or the black people who found that the only way to receive equal rights was to fight for them in the streets and die when necessary? I'm sure Martin Luther King Jr. would have rather that he didn't have to have half his face shot off because of the fight he led. He would have rather it was easy. But it wasn't, and that's the point.

Christie said that to explain why he would veto a bill that would recognize same-sex marriage in his state. He doesn't seem to understand that his rationale is the reason such things have to be done via elected officials - because individual rights should never be held hostage to the whims of the public.
