Dangerous White Stereotypes

Dangerous white stereotypes

I agree with a fair amount of what the professor says in that piece about the movie "The Help," but I have to wonder if she and I were watching the same movie. She suggests that there were no portrayals of "good" white people who perpetuated and benefited from racism, that the movie made it seem as though that only "bad" people could do such a thing. I believe the white main character is named Skeeter. She courageously writes the book that tells the stories of black domestics, with a major assist from the primary black character. Skeeter's mother was a good woman - but a woman who nonetheless gave into the racist system in which she found herself. She said quite clearly that she wished she had displayed the same level of courage Skeeter did. I appreciate the movie - and recommend it highly - because it does provide all of those layers and nuance many of its critics claim it doesn't, layers and nuance that look a lot like real life lived by real people.
