I have not done nearly as much research and interviewing to understand the potential illegal immigration and energy policy reform proposals being backed by Sen. Lindsey Graham as much as I did on health care, but I know enough to understand big boy politics when I see it. And it is clear President Obama and the Senate Democrats -- led by Sen. Harry Reid, who desperately needs a high Hispanic turnout in November to keep his seat -- are screwing Graham over. I would use a less raw word, but I think it applies here, particularly because these are two issues Graham has already stuck his neck out on. That's unfortunate because now it puts both (necessary) reform bills in greater jeopardy, and they would have been difficult to pass either way. The Republicans played politics on health care. And though the Democrats got an assist from the folks in Arizona -- who ignited the illegal immigration issue in ways no one expected this year -- it's the Democrats who are doing the dastardly deed of putting politics before country this time around.
