After more than a year of debate, topped by last week's health summit, is anyone still unclear that no matter what the Democrats come up with on comprehensive health care the GOP will simply not support it, not even Sens. Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins, who were once supposedly willing to compromise? The Senate bill had already included bipartisan ideas and President Obama will ask for even more GOP ideas to be included, and still, GOP leaders have flat out said no even before reading his letter or waiting for today's announcement. Call it politics, call it a philosophical or principled disagreement, call it what you like, but it should be abundantly clear -- if it wasn't several months ago -- that Sen. Jim DeMint's "Waterloo" philosophy, which seems to have given the GOP some short-term political gains, is the foundation upon which total GOP opposition to health care reform is built. Democrats need to move forward with whatever tools are available.
