A couple of posts ago I argued that Obama's falling -- though still solid -- poll numbers are not the result of white people turning against a black man, as some news organizations are, unfortunately, beginning to suggest. While I still believe that to be the overall truth, I got the following email from a reader after my column this morning about President Obama. He (or she) titled it "Obamacare" and did not leave a name. The email is below, though let me make two quick rebuttals. Not having "lack of health insurance" as proof that people don't die from lack of health insurance -- even though studies from Harvard and the Urban Institute and others have shown that people do die because of lack of insurance -- is like trying to say AIDS doesn't exist because the death certificate reads "complications from pneumonia" instead of "died of AIDS." Also, the emailer said we don't have health reform because of a lack of leadership. He's right. The GOP blocked the last attempt at comprehensive reform in the early 1990s, did nothing about it during their 12-year hold on both Houses of Congress and are trying to block reform again. Without leadership from the president, they will succeed once again. Here's the email. I highlighted the final sentence but changed nothing else:

'So Much For Experimenting With Minority Presidents'
'45,000 Americans die every year because of lack of health insurance" How many death certificates have as the cause of death "lack of health insurance"? NONE! The reason we do not have health reform is because of "lack of leadership". Democrats seem more concerned about punishing insurance companies than better health care. This is one of many reasons that Obama wiil be a less that average one time president. So much for experimenting with minority presidents.
