At least one reader of The Sun News is really upset with me. He hated my column this morning calling out Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer for his "stray animals" comment-- he agrees with Bauer -- and he grew angrier during our 15-minute conversation because he said I wasn't listening to him. (A few other callers left similar voice mails.) He said I wasn't listening because some poor people are like stray animals. His example? The alleged Walmart shoplifter who had major medical problems and died while an employee tried to stop her from living the store. Normally, I try to listen to readers who are upset with me, mostly sit quiet on the phone and allow them to react to what I wrote in anyway they like. I figure that I got my say in the paper, so they should get theirs on the phone, at least. But I couldn't help myself this time. I tried hard to get him to say that poor people were not stray animals and shouldn't be compared to them. I couldn't. By the end of the conversation, he said it had not been a pleasure to speak with me. I felt the same about him. I'll try to do better next time.
I've posted a few email responses below.
Dear Mr. Bailey,
Thank you for another column that needed written. You put in words the thoughts about Mr. Bauer’s speech, that raised my blood pressure, to say the least..the sad thing is, there are still those that think he is right. Like you said, it is good if he works with and helps the “poor”, but hopefully, it is for the right reason ..not for the attention he gets for doing so.
My husband and I raised 9 children, and at times , they were also on reduced/free lunches . Once we received food stamps for a time, but we tried to feed them.. we ate a lot of beans and rice ,grits etc., but we made it. .I am so glad we were able to get through with that help. This experience helped shape the compassionate feelings for others in the same situation , the willingness to help others that they have now, that they are grown, and they in turn are teaching their children the same compassion.
I have to say that at this old age, this type of politician puts us more in danger as a country than a terrorist does. I know there are good and bad in all parties, but after listening to President Obama’s speech, the Republican’s responses, it is clear that they will never work with him. They are determined to focus trying to block everything he tries to accomplish, destroy any one that tries to help, and rile the radical groups , so they can get back in power. They have no intention of working at Partisanship .And this is sad and scary. We NEED people that are willing to work together, and not think of what elections 2-3-4 years down the line will bring.
I feel a bit helpless, but knowing there are some such as yourself that write about things such as this gives some hope. So please, when you receive letters bashing your writings, know that there are those that thank you !
Sincerely
Faye Graves
Well said!
