Sanford Keeps Job, Lowers Office

Sanford keeps job, lowers office

Update: This is a subject that hits people in the gut in many ways, which is why it has generated several phone calls and emails already this morning. I'll just share two because it illustrates how different sets of eyes and brains can take in the same piece and come away with extremely different views. (For the record again, I voted for Mark Sanford. Twice.)

Those two responses are below:

Issac:
Your politics are very liberal It is beyond me that the sun newspaper continues to carry you when most of the population that read the paper are conservative. Its going to back fire on this paper in time.
You are always touting black issues and you continue to harp on the Governor of South Carolina. Have you ever read about the Mayor of Washington DC his infidelity and his use of drugs yet he is still on the DC city council. He was found with call girls and passed out drunk in his car along the highway. I lived in Virginia and read about this in the liberal Washington Post newspaper.
Your statement you will never eat Watermelon in front of white people tells me you are a racist of the worst kind and you get the opportunity to tout your racialism in the newspaper, by the way I will eat watermelon in front of people black or white people. Your book Proud Black and Southern also points to your racism. God for bid if someone wrote a book Proud White and Southern you would be the first to ridicule it and state how racists it is.
Your race should get down and thank god that you were brought you here from Africa. You could still be in Africa with the Wars, Aids, Faminie, Unemployment, living in a tent, Government corruption of the worst kind. You make money on firing the furnaces of racism instead you should look at the good things that have been accomplished like a black president even if he is from another country.
The Sun News paper pays you to exploit the racism issue and its beyond me why but then again I forget and have but to look a the Socialist Party we now have as our Government and it makes sense.
Do anything to take the country down. And its going to happen. You will see change in 2010.

Dear Mr. Bailey - I just want to express my thanks for your wonderful column today about Mark Sanford being allowed to remain in office. It is right on the mark and very well stated as well. We moved to South Carolina last year from our home state of Indiana. In that time we have been amazed and dismayed at the lack of ethics evident in elected officials and up and down the spectrum of office. While unethical people are not confined to South Carolina, of course, it does seem that there is much more of the "look the other way" syndrome here than what we found at home. I assumed an honorable man would resign when found guilty of an affair abroad and use of state funds to maintain it were discovered. But that did not happen at all. Then I assumed that the state legislature would force him to leave through impeachment, and now, as you so well stated, that did not happen either. I suspect much of the "good old boy" politics is involved - many of the legislatures may have dark secrets of their own and feel that by leaving Sanford (I no longer will call him my governor) in office, perhaps their own "transgressions" will remain hidden. Whatever the reasons, the bar most certainly has been lowered for all future elected officials, and I personally feel ashamed on behalf of our adopted state of South Carolina.

I want to say that both my husband and myself have enjoyed reading your columns and look forward to them very much. Keep up the good work. My hope is that most of our adopted citizens of this state feel exactly as you do, and feel disappointed in our leadership. You have the words to say it and I hope you will continue to do so.
