Did Obama convince you about the need for an additional 30,000 troops, a new strategy and a beginning-of-the-end-date? I didn't need convincing. I don't think we could pull up the stakes and leave with the condition Afghanistan is in. As Colin Powell would say, we broke it so we must fix it. Besides that, let us never forget that 9/11 was launched from that place, and we don't want to make the mistake of ignoring it again. I think signaling that we won't be there forever is a risky proposition and there are legitimate arguments against it. But it's worth the risk because we can't let our already-stretched-thin troops to think this will never come to an end. That message is also important to the corrupt-Afghanistan government and our allies who are also facing countrymen who no longer see the need to stay. And I don't buy the argument that the enemy will just wait us out, given that we have already announced intentions to leave Iraq and no one is saying that's a bad thing. Besides, that, we can't be there forever. (Frank Rich says we simply can't afford to do this with the state our country is in.) We must find a better way to fight terrorism. I don't know what that is. I'm hoping someone in a high place is still trying to come up with what that might be.
