Were Obama's Race Remarks Too Risky?

Were Obama's Race Remarks Too Risky? No. But they were risky. And that's a good thing. We can't get beyond race without having frank discussions, and it was good that the president didn't take the easy political road and said nothing. He weighed in. We can agree or disagree with what he said, how he said it and even his conclusion. But I'm glad he gave us his honest reaction. Now he should take it a step further: President Obama should call up his good friend Professor Gates, as well as Sgt. Crowley, the officer who arrested Gates, invite them to the White House and have anopen, honest public discussion among three men who view this incident throughdifferent lenses. Disagreements and heated, race-tinged racial incidents will occur because we are imperfect human beings. That Crowley and Gates got mad and misunderstood each other isn't a strange occurrence. It's a common one. What's less common is for all involved to humble themselves enough for the greater good and show that there is a productive way to deal with such situations.
