It's not about heritage vs. hate; it's about money

The ACC scrapped plans to bring its annual baseball tournament, and tens of thousands of visitors, to Myrtle Beach for three years because of the NAACP economic boycott. I'll be dealing with the issue more in tomorrow's column, but one thing that's clear is that this is no longer about the overly-simplified heritage vs. hate paradigm this debate has for too long been discussed. This is about lost revenue -- much of it we can't calculate because not everyone who avoids the state because of the flag holds press conferences or issues public statements. They simply don't show up. We can be upset with the NAACP for sticking to its guns even during a major economic downturn, and maybe that's warranted. But shouldn't we be asking more questions of those who represent us, as in why protecting a flag is more important than guaranteeing the health of the state's most important industry, tourism?
